thought i'd share some thoughts on two releases in particular, of the many
that i've picked up lately, that have stuck out as fairly strong releases:
jeremy dower 2xLP
sentimental dance music for couples, plug research
this album really sounds unique, and i can't really say i can think of
anything comparable...it's like the cinematic orchestra or amon tobin
material but with all the hard and rough elements of their proto-jazz
softened and reshapened into a mille plateaux styled clicks and cuts
approach; effectively, it has a sense of ebing amon tobin crossed with SND's
monotonous, bubbly, and glitchy beats. and there's like 10 or 11 tracks, so
there's quite a bit of variation going on across the four sides of vinyl,
ranging from mille-plateaux styled ballroom music to mille-plateaux styled
freeform jazz, all crossed with that steely techno sensibility. kind of like
what those recent thomas brinkmann/morr music remixes of tied and tickled
trio tried to do, i think. i think it's also available on cd, but can't be
sure, there may be more information online. does anyone else know?
rapid transit cd
chocolate industries
one of the first really strong releases from this label in a good while,
though as someone already said i believe, it's got more than a handful of
tracks that have come out prior. but, all in all, as it is still 15 tracks
in length, and those that were pre-released are generally quite strong
regardless, that isn't such a detriment here....largely cos they've included
the gescom PBO remix from two-three years back. the album as a whole leans
heavily towards the scott-herren side of things, which isn't so bad given
the fact that all of his stuff here is quite good (as prefuse 73 and
communication project, the latter of which sounds sort of like bone thugz
and harmony as channeled through warp records)
anyway, i recommend both of these albums to people who may have been turned
off of late by the seemingly mediocre crop of releases of the past month
(ahem, slute leta, ahem)....the sonovac stuff on output is pretty strong
too, by the way.
